I was minding my Miss Dorothy’s Garden business at the Vivid Academy Booth during the 45th Annual Black Cuisine at George Davis Senior Center. Then, guess who was walking by. Our eyes locked. 👀 I moved—straight over to introduce myself and shake his hand! I told him, “I’ve heard great things about you,” and just like that.
What a day at the 45th Annual Black Cuisine hosted by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center! The soul food, old-school R&B, and line dancing? 🔥 The heart of Bayview showed OUT! 💃🏾🕺🏽
I had the joy of sharing Miss Dorothy’s Garden alongside an incredible team of volunteers decked out in our "I Am Blooming" shirts by Purposed Products:
Muhammad Al-Kareem – a childhood friend of my husband's and someone who knows Mom well from the neighborhood 💛
Lau-Rene Manuel – a new friend I met at the Public Works Black History Month Luncheon (and now official Miss Dorothy’s Garden Cardigan Ambassador 🥰 decked out in festive flowers!)
Melinda Trammell – my Delta Sigma Theta Sorority sister 🐘❤️ who, as a caregiver for her 88-year-old mother, holds the Miss Dorothy's Garden Legacy Project close to her heart.
While Karl the Fog stayed home, his cousin Ken the Wind (yes, I just named him 😄) made a cameo! Mild at first, but later had us chasing down signs, securing the tent, and laughing through it all—truly a gone with the wind experience averted! 😂
But beyond the breeze, the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center offered the warmth and spirit that has defined their mission since 1971. Their work enhances the quality of life for African American elders in San Francisco, offering vital services from nutritious meals to housing advocacy and health care—all with dignity and love.
The real highlight? Making new connections to spread the seeds of kindness through:
🌻 BEE Buddy Box giveaways – sponsoring children to join Miss Dorothy and her BEE Helpers
🌹 Miss Dorothy’s Garden Parties – immersive experiences to put the BEE Attitudes into action
🌸 MyStoryBook Workshops – empowering kids to write and publish their own stories
Each encounter reminded me that this is bigger than a book—it’s about nurturing community, honoring legacy, and creating space for every generation to bloom where they are planted.
