Meet Miss Dorothy
At 100 years young, Dorothy Witherspoon embodies the spirit of resilience and compassion that can transform communities. Born in 1924, she has witnessed the evolution of San Francisco from the Great Depression to the digital age, yet her mission has remained constant: to love God and serve others.
Background
Miss Dorothy hails from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but has called the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco her home for over 80 years. Her journey from the southern fields to the bustling streets of San Francisco is a testament to her adaptability and enduring care for others.
Career & Service
With a career spanning 39 years as a psychiatric emergency room nurse at San Francisco General Hospital, Miss Dorothy has comforted countless souls in their most vulnerable moments. Beyond her professional role, she has served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, a member of the community police program for the San Francisco Police Department, and a steadfast volunteer at the San Marin Food Bank. Her commitment extends into her spiritual life as well, where she has been a pillar of St. John Missionary Baptist Church, faithfully teaching and leading for over 66 years.
